The Kitty AI

Artificial Intelligence for Governance
Pinar Yoldas [2016]

It is the year 2039. It’s no longer the presidents, prime ministers, and royal families who are in power, but an artificial intelligence (AI). To seduce and mislead us, this AI has taken the shape of an adorable kitten. Kitty AI holds a monologue about her origins and the way she will govern. As the first non-human governor, she leads a politician-free zone with a network of AI’s. Because she lives in mobile devices, she can be anywhere at any time and give attention to up to 3 million people at once. Is this what leaders will look like when the algorithms take over?

Fake me Deep

Marnix de Nijs [2021]

Algorithms screen your face to match it with the characteristics and other personal information of a deepfake profile. Sounds like a dystopian nightmare?
The biometric installation Fake Me Deep is confrontational but also empowering. The robots match your facial features with a deepfake you have created yourself. You dictate the fictional characteristics of your avatar and bring this persona to life during your visit to Fake Me Hard by applying a variety of deepfake techniques.
The message: if we are being fooled by technology, we should learn to fake harder and better ourselves.

Phyllotaxis

Joris Strijbos & Daan Johan [2017]

Allow yourself to be mesmerized by the abstract light and sound patterns of Phyllotaxis. Controlled by an algorithmic composition and repetitive patterns, the installation transforms the space into a hypnotic vortex. It is a digital, automated equivalent of the natural phenomenon phyllotaxis, in which leaves grow along a stem in a repeating spiral. A generative computer program is controlling the images which are partly generated by a real-time sound analysis. The internal interaction between different algorithms results in an ongoing composition of light, sound, and movement, that – just like the repetitive precision of nature – attracts and amazes.

Adcredo

The Deep Belief Network
Joey Holder [2018]

Taking a fictional data-analysis company called Adcredo as her starting point, Holder explores the role that online networks can play in the construction of belief. In Adcredo (Latin for ‘to put trust in’), we see avatars of Kanye West, Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Peter Thiel alongside otherworldly creatures based on conspiracy theory and synchromysticism. The installation is part of a larger project in which a fictional world is created against the (all too real) backdrop of fake news, conspiracy theory, cyber-espionage, and political populism. How is our worldview affected by the rise of unjust ideologies and fantasies?
