Planet CityLiam Young, 2021
Driven by the urge to expand, mankind tries to control everything on the planet, from the smallest cell to tectonic plates larger than continents. After centuries of colonization, globalization, and depletion of natural resources, there is almost nothing left that is untouched by human hands. The technology that is used for this, from algorithms to AI, is only valued on the short-term profit that can be achieved. But what if we radically reverse this endless sprawl? In Planet City, director Liam Young presents a scenario in which 10 billion people have retreated in a single, giant urban hub, where we can find everything we need and all cultures can peacefully coexist. This extreme densification allows the rest of the planet to be reclaimed by the wilderness. Is this the future of our species?
