Users of social media like TikTok and Instagram – consciously or unconsciously – desire hyperrealist perfection. But who sets the standards for beauty and femininity on these platforms driven by artificial intelligence (AI)? With her video self-portrait Techno Venus, Julie Patard explores her own digital pursuit of perfection, revealing the restrictive codes of social media imagery. She uses her most-liked Instagram selfies as make-up for 3D scans of her own face. The result is both alienating and unfree. Is this the ideal that algorithms impose on us?
