Thanks to deep learning, computers are taking over more and more tasks from our brains. Large companies such as Google and Facebook train artificial intelligence (AI) to ‘read’ and contextualize images. Nowadays, a machine can not only recognize faces, but even generate lifelike persons. Epoch shows us what happens when Instagram accounts using popular hashtags such as #selfie #dog, and #beauty, are filled in entirely with such automatically generated images. It is a computer interpretation of our contemporary visual culture, which we constantly help optimize by feeding Instagram with images, captions, emojis & hashtags.
