In The Netherlands, we can hardly imagine what war is like anymore. While the last of the World War II veterans are dying out, we talk about the ‘battle’ against the corona virus and ‘healthcare heroes’. With Diorama, Joep van Lieshout reflects on the typically human urge for destruction, but also brings out deep charity and self-sacrifice. Wars, with their horrors, also brought changes for the better, such as women’s suffrage and the development of aviation. Nowadays we imagine ourselves, anonymously from behind our PC screen, in an all-encompassing safe space where conflict has been banned in favor of sterile consensus. But what is brewing beneath the surface?
